b. 1982 · United States
Anthony Cheung (b. 1982, San Francisco) is an American composer and pianist whose music explores the senses, a wide range of instrumental techniques and expression, improvisational traditions, reimagined musical artifacts and layered textual meaning, with a particular interest in ambiguous sound sources and shifting tuning and timbre. He studied music and history at Harvard University and received his DMA from Columbia University. His works have been commissioned by Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others, and Talea Ensemble has given world premieres of his music. He is co-director of the Grossman Ensemble at the University of Chicago. The critic Paul Griffiths has written of his “intensely accurate sense of where his notes are going.”
