Anton Webern (1883–1945) was an Austrian composer and conductor and, with Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, a central figure of the Second Viennese School. His concentrated, crystalline handling of twelve-tone technique made his small catalogue one of the most influential of the twentieth century, above all for the post-war avant-garde — including the young Kyiv composers of the 1960s, Valentyn Sylvestrov among them. His String Quartet, Op. 28, commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, is built on a tone row derived from the B-A-C-H motif.
