Julia Gomelskaya (1964–2016) was a Ukrainian composer and musicologist. She earned her composition degree from the Odesa State A. V. Nezhdanova Music Academy in 1990 and went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (1995–96) with Robert Saxton, completing a Master of Music with distinction from City University of London, after attending the International Gaudeamus Composers’ Course in Amsterdam (1994). An associate professor at the Odesa conservatory, she belonged to the National Union of Composers of Ukraine, the ISCM’s New Music Association and the British Academy of Composers. She won six Guildhall composition competitions — including the Witold Lutosławski Prize from Chester Music — along with the Borys Liatoshynsky Prize and numerous international laureatships. Her output ranged from the ballets Jane Eyre (1997) and Fates (2016) to four symphonies, concertos, and chamber, vocal, theatrical and electronic works performed and broadcast across Europe and beyond.
