Katia Olenych, composer

Katia Olenych (b. 1982, Uzhhorod) graduated from Uzhhorod College of Music and the Kyiv Music Academy, studying composition with Levko Kolodub and electroacoustic composition with Alla Zahaykevych. She took part in the International Electroacoustic Music Projects EM-Visia and Electroacoustics, and taught contemporary composition and improvisation at the Uzhhorod Music School and College of Music. She was also a writer and poet.

Kolomyiky are a folk genre that involves ambiguity and complexity of the subjects through a “string” of different content couplets. The composer tried to move these features into the sphere of electronic music. Material for the work was recorded in Kyiv in 2004 during the Orange Revolution.
