Missy Mazzoli (b. 1980) is an American composer whose operas, orchestral and chamber works have been performed by the Kronos Quartet, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among many others. Her operas include Breaking the Waves (2016) and Proving Up (2018); she served as Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and in 2018 she was among the first women commissioned to write a mainstage opera for the Metropolitan Opera. Sometimes described as a “metamodernist,” she shares with Sylvestrov an interest in music that speaks to and through the past.
