A world premiere. Sonare for Double Bass and Ensemble is part of a series the composer has written under the title sonare (“to sound”), continuing his aim of confronting the audience with the question, “What are your impressions of these structured, human-made sounds?” The work continues Chedryk’s exploration of the double bass as a solo instrument, now positioning it as a soloist interweaving with the other instruments: “I endeavor to construct a rich, saturated, and tense sonic field, particularly emphasizing low frequencies… filled with an array of extended techniques.” Each of the Sonare works has been written and performed in a different place — the first in Lviv, the second in Berlin, the solo double-bass one premiered in Kyiv, and this one, written for UCMF, completed in Munich — a testament to the movements of the modern composer and the migration of music across borders.
