Oleksandr Shchetynsky

b. 1960 · Ukraine

Oleksandr Shchetynsky (b. June 22, 1960, Kharkiv) graduated from the Kharkiv Art Institute in 1983, studying composition with Valentyn Borysov and drawing on the example of Valentyn Bibik and the Soviet avant-garde. He developed a personal post-serial language that combines quasi-serial procedures with close attention to the attractiveness of sound and melody, growing increasingly postmodern in its play of historical styles. His many international honours include prizes at the Kazimierz Serocki (1990), Fribourg Sacred Music (1991, First Prize), Witold Lutosławski (1995), Henri Dutilleux (1996) and Gustav Mahler (1998) competitions, the Russian “Gold Mask” theatre award (2000) and the International Composition Prize Luxembourg (2006). His output includes three operas and the chamber opera Annunciation, as well as film scores. (No dedicated ucmfnyc.com profile page exists; this biography is compiled from public sources.)
