Philip Glass (b. 1937, Baltimore) is an American composer and one of the defining figures of musical minimalism. Since founding the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1968 he has written operas including Einstein on the Beach (1976), Satyagraha (1980) and Akhnaten (1983), as well as symphonies, concertos, string quartets and film scores. His twenty Piano Etudes, composed between 1991 and 2012, trace two decades of his writing for the instrument.
