Polina Pohozha

Ukraine

Polina Pohozha is a Ukrainian composer and pianist from Odesa who also plays the trembita, the long wooden horn of the Hutsul highlanders of the Carpathians. After completing her master’s degree in 2022 she moved to Sweden because of the war in Ukraine and continued her studies in composition at the Gotland School of Composition (Gotlands Tonsättarskola), where she wrote Arka — an archaic work reviving memories of the Carpathian Mountains — for trombonist Ivo Nilsson and saxophonist Jörgen Pettersson. Her Likitsary (2023) draws on a deeply personal experience of an ancient village in western Ukraine, where landscape and Ukrainian legends become intertwined.
