The Desert Breathes is a solo flute piece created especially for the Ukrainian flutist Nataliya Kozhushko-Maksymiv as part of her project Spirit and Breath. Inspired by the poetry of the Ukrainian modernist poet Lesya Ukrainka, the work resonates with the life and spirit of a free desert, attempting to merge a somewhat hyperbolized demonstration of the breathing process in flute playing with a broad, breathing melody that reflects the vastness of the desert; the performer’s own voice, quoting Lesya Ukrainka, adds another dimension through poetic words. The piece speaks to the life force embedded in each breath.
