Solomiya Moroz, composer

Solomiya Moroz is a Ukrainian-Canadian composer-performer based in the UK, holding a Ph.D. in music composition from the University of Huddersfield and a master’s in Live Electronics from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Working as a flautist across composition, live electronics, and interdisciplinary performance, her music has recently been premiered by Zubin Kanga, Jennifer Torrence, Ensemble Apparat, Teodoro Anzellotti, the Quasar saxophone quartet, and the Bozzini Quartet. With bandurist Volodymyr Voyt she forms Duo SAS, whose microtonal repertoire for Kharkiv-style bandura and flute was programmed for UCMF 2022; the duo could not travel to New York owing to the full-scale Russian invasion, and bandurist Julian Kytasty performed in their place.

The Solar Machine

UCMF 2025 · Fantastyka · Mar 13 · 2025 · Electroacoustic · World premiere

World premiere; after Volodymyr Vynnychenko

Performed by TAK Ensemble (Ensemble), Laura Barger (Piano & synthesizer)

“I chose Volodymyr Vynnychenko’s novel The Solar Machine as the primary inspiration for my composition of the same name, written for TAK Ensemble. Vynnychenko’s novel is particularly fitting as it explores themes of technology, power, and humanity — ideas central to my recent work. Set in a future where humanity wields advanced technologies to control its environment, The Solar Machine follows a protagonist who confronts the ethical dilemmas arising from such immense power… In my adaptation we become witnesses to rumors, revelations, the persecution of solar-machine enthusiasts, and eventual wars and conflicts that ultimately culminate in the triumph of the solar machine.” A world premiere and UCMF’s first commission, this six-part music-theatre work integrates live plant data into the compositional process (the performance device was developed by Massimo Sterlino and Nicolò Merondino at the University of Padova).
