b. 1953 · Ukraine
Viktor Kaminsky (b. 1953, Ternopil region) studied composition with Volodymyr Flys at the Lysenko State Conservatory in Lviv, where he has taught in the composition department since 1978; he heads the Lviv branch of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine. His music evolved from Second Viennese School influences through the “new folklore wave” and a theatrical period with Lviv’s Maria Zankovetska Drama Theatre toward three principal directions since the mid-1990s: liturgical music, cantata-oratorios and instrumental chamber music. His works include two symphonies, the symphony-cantata Ukraine. The Way of the Cross, the oratorio I Am Going, I Am Calling, I Am Calling..., and concertos for violin, piano and organ; he also authored Ukraine’s first textbook on the history of electronic and computer music. He is a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine (2005), the Mykola Lysenko Prize (2000) and the Stanislav Liudkevych Prize (2004), and was named an Honored Artist of Ukraine in 1995.
