Volodymyr Voyt
Ukraine
Volodymyr Voyt is a Ukrainian bandura player, improviser, and composer born in Kyiv, recognized as an Honored and Merited Artist of Ukraine. He performs as soloist and ensemble musician across Western Europe and North America with groups including the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America, the Canadian Bandurist Capella, and the Axios Men’s Ensemble, and is a permanent member of the Hryhory Verjovka Ukrainian National Folkloric Ensemble. Promoting the Kharkiv style of bandura playing, he explores avant-garde, minimalist, ethno-Baroque, and ethno-Renaissance idioms through free and structured improvisation using graphic scores, modal and microtonal settings, and extended technique. With composer-flautist Solomiya Moroz he forms Duo SAS, which was programmed for UCMF 2022; under martial law he could not leave Kyiv to travel to New York, and bandurist Julian Kytasty performed in the duo’s place, opening with a video message from Voyt in Ukraine.
