instrumental “walk” through Lviv derived from a street histogram

Performed by Andrii Didorenko (Violin), Yuliya Basis (Piano), Valeriya Sholokhova (Cello), Gleb Kanasevich (Clarinet), Tristan Kasten-Krause (Double bass)

The structure of “Almost Real Directions” is derived from a histogram, created by the Ukrainian team Maparni, of data concerning the length and general direction of the streets of Lviv. By using the histogram as a musical coordinate system, Shliabanska has created an instrumental walk through the city with “Almost Real Directions.” It is also an attempt to subjectively transfer the street chart into a musical coordinate system used to compose the work.

atropa belladonna

“I was walking through the forest and found a beautiful flower. Suddenly I heard a very quiet sound. I went closer, right up to the plant, and realized that the sound was coming directly from the flower! Immediately I took out my recorder and recorded the sound. Here I present the recording without manipulation, just amplified. By the way, after this, people told me that this is the poisonous flower, atropa belladonna.”
